Thank you Lance

Lance Armstrong has officially announced he is retiring after this year's Tour de France. He will make one more attempt to win for the seventh time in a row, and is retiring to spend more time with his family.

For me Lance Armstrong is one of the most inspiring sports figures this country has had in a long long long time. Not only has he won the most grueling sports contest there is (SIX TIMES!) he also battled cancer twice. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend his autobiography.

Yes, I know he left his wife at the height of his success, a woman who supported him throughout all his illnesses and early stages of his career. And yes I know some people think he used all sorts of performance enhancing drugs to do what he did. But I'd like to think that in the midst of a sports society where everyone and their grandmother seems to be doing drugs, that there is one honest guy who is successful through hard work and the blessings of being physically gifted. And as far as his marital problems, guess what...he's human. Doesn't excuse it, but celebrities have problems just like the rest of us. It's just that they have to work them out in public, while we get to keep it to ourselves.

Anyway thanks for the ride Lance, hopefully your example will continue to inspire athletes and cancer survivors for generations to come.
