I was lucky enough to get a ticket to the final performance of Julius Caesar last night on Broadway, staring Denzel Washington. The reviews hadn't exactly been stellar, but I came away from the 3 hour production impressed. If you don't know the story, it's by William Shakespeare and about a conspiracy to kill Julius Caesar. Washington played Brutus, the leader of the conspiracy. I was prepped for a mediocre performance since the reviews had been less than impressive, but wow! There were a few parts when people had some projection problems - it's THEATRE PEOPLE! You have to speak up for those of us sitting in the balcony!! And there was one hilarious point when Denzel almost cracked up Jimmy Fallon style during a scene. I thought that would have been fabulous, but then again...it's a Shakespearean tragedy. Probably not the best time to be giggling.
The thing that bugged me was how the audience reacted to Denzel. He got this huge round of applause when his character first enters. Hey, let's wait to make sure the guy remembers his lines and actually DESERVES a standing ovation before we give him one okay? It's just because he's a movie star and famous. What about all the other actors on stage with him? Who at times overshadowed Mr. Celebrity with THEIR performances? What about them?
And people were laughing at a lot of random, non funny parts. I don't get that. Is it because we're dumb Americans who don't really get Shakespeare? Or maybe that was the intention of the writer and actors, and it's ME that's the idiot? Overall though, I thought Denzel did well, and I'm 90% sure he looked straight at me during the curtain call. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Gotta give some props to old Bill Shakespeare - the man wrote his plays HUNDREDS of years ago, and they're still selling out theatres and making people think. That's freakin' awesome.
Speaking of writing, I may have some interest in my screenplay I wrote - I was contacted by a production company that read about my story on a registration service I use for screenplays, and they've asked for a copy of the script. This is nothing other than someone wanting to read it, but I'm THRILLED to have some interest in my baby!! And it gave me additional motivation as I continue working on my new one!
Maybe Denzel will be interested in the lead, seeing as how his run on Broadway has come to an end. I'm just sayin'.
