I went yesterday after work to try on "the" dress the store had borrowed for me....a beautiful store and the sales assistant was very nice. I will definitely recommend Suky's to any bride I meet. (Plus they are in the same shopping area as a fabulous paper store with cool invites AND a farmers market...talk about one stop shopping.)
But the dress...well, it's a sample. And that means it is what the RUNWAY MODELS WEAR AT THEIR SHOWS. It was a bridal size 4 which street size is basically 0. Oh yeah, you can see where this is going. There was no way I was fitting in to this dress. We held it up to my body so I could see how the neck line looked and how it would fit around the bodice. Like how you hold something up to yourself when you want to get an idea how it looks but don't want to be bothered actually putting it on. We couldn't even fit my arms through the arm holes. Seriously, it stopped just about my elbows. There was another bride there at the same time and she was a size 2 and had trouble getting it on. I really am dieing to know if anyone buys that this weekend (they only could keep it for 4 days and then it has to be returned to the designer.)
To top it all off it was a seafoam green color. I can get it in any color I want, but the sample was in green. I honestly I could have gotten past all that but the truth is the fabric was not that impressive and it was heavy as hell. Easily 15 pounds. The fabric felt like whatever parachutes are made out of. You would have heard every move I made in that dress. The deal breaker was that there is no train on it. Hello? getting married in a cathedral, need a freakin' train.
You're probably thinking what a waste, but I HAD to at least try it on. Once I saw it, I knew if I didn't I'd always wonder about it. And I am still impressed the store went to the lengths it did to borrow it for me.
But hope is not completely lost - there's still a few more salons to go to over the next few weeks, and then, if that doesn't work - I found a dress maker/designer. More on her soon. (Here's a hint - her dresses are about $2,000 less than I would have paid for the parachute dress...yes that's what we're going to call it from now on, and yes they do exist.)
And Suky isn't a done deal either - they have gorgeous Mother of the Bride dresses (hint hint Mom) and the prettiest bridal shoe collection I've seen. The fun will DEFINITELY continue.
