What the hell was that?

Yesterday in NY we had a bit of a scare. There was a waft of the smell of gasoline in the morning just about all over the city. Some folks smelled it. Some didn't. Some buildings evacuated, some didn't.

Nearly 24 hours after whatever it was, no one has any idea WHAT it was. A barge? Airplane exhaust? A weird wind thing from Jersey? I smelled it and it definitely smelled like gasoline, yet there was no report of a gas leak anywhere. It only lasted about 10 minutes and then it was gone.

My favorite quote from the press conference was that the odor was not toxic or dangerous in any way, but that they didn't know what it was. How do you know if it wasn't toxic or dangerous if you don't know what it was?

More importantly, why didn't any reporter ask that?
